Welcome to the most complete Japanese text generator on the internet! It produces 6 different Japanese style text fonts, including the classic full-width Vaporwave/Aesthetic styles, and three different extra thicc text styles. These Japanese style letters come from the Unicode standard. It was put together in the 1980s, and now includes over 100,000 different symbols. So there are many more textual characters out there than the ones you see on your keyboard. Obviously other languages need characters as well, and since Unicode is an international organisation, they wanted to cater to everyone with their text encoding rule set. Now, in amongst all the Japanese characters, there are many that sort of look like characters from the Latin alphabet (i.e. the ones you're reading right now). For example, '乇' looks a bit like 'E'. So we can use that to produce a Japanese 'font' for English characters. And indeed, that's how this Japanese font generator works, and why you're able to copy and paste the resulting characters (which you wouldn't be able to do if it were an actual font).
Unicode has all sorts of fancy symbols that we can use to create different alphabets, and so I've included a bunch more fonts other than the Japanese ones. And I guess they ones at the top could be more generally called 'Asian style text fonts', since the full-width text isn't just used in Japan.
In case it wasn't clear, it should be noted that this generator doesn't convert your text to the actual Japanese language! It just converts text into Japenese-style symbols that you can use for memes or whatever. That's how the 乇乂ㄒ尺卂 ㄒ卄丨匚匚 thing got started, by the way - a silly meme about Aku from Samurai Jack ordering an 'extra thick' henchman to assassinate Jack. But that's a story for another time.
In any case, if this Japanese text generator was useful please leave a comment below! Also feel free to leave feedback too. If you've found a cool Japanese text font that I haven't included, please share it! The full alphabet would be useful, so I don't have to go hunting to find the rest of the symbols, and can add it to this generator right away. 卞廾丹几片己!

To design a font from scratch, you start with a few key letters. In Latin script, these are the capitals H and O, followed by the lowercase n and o. In Arabic, ب ج ر د and ن will do a similar job—but after that it gets a lot more complicated. First, there’s connectivity to consider. “We have to maintain the illusion that the letters have been drawn with one pen stroke,” said Nadine Chahine, a type designer who has won awards for her Arabic typefaces (a family of fonts).
Then there’s spacing. Each connecting stroke is spaced differently, depending on the character form being used; Latin script has two cases, upper and lower, but Arabic can have up to four shapes per letter, as well as numerous short vowels that need to be designed as separate glyphs. “Once you get used to it, it’s not rocket science,” Chahine insisted, but that’s after designing close to 150 Arabic typefaces, including the Dubai Font, Zapfino Arabic, and Koufiya, which was the first to include simultaneously designed Arabic and Latin parts.
When she started out in 2000, almost twenty years ago, there was just a handful of quality Arabic typefaces. Today there are thousands, but the choice still looks limited compared to the variety of Latin options online. “It’s only in the last 20 years that we’ve had the technology allowing the correct display of any style of Arabic writing. Before that, digital devices were restricted to using simplified styles of Arabic,” said Kamal Mansour, linguistic typographer at Monotype, one of the world’s largest type foundries.

Major technological breakthroughs, including the introduction of Unicode—an industry standard for the representation of text—and open-type font format has brought the online space up to speed with the complexity of Arabic, which flummoxed mid-20th Century typewriter developers. Linotype machines at the time used two keyboards to print Arabic newspapers, which proved more effective than efforts to simplify the language into disconnected characters. These days, modern software creates the links between letters. “We now live in a digital era that is able to support Arabic,” Chahine said.

But despite the large number of languages that draw on the Arabic script, including Persian, Pashto, Urdu, Balochi, and the Jawi alphabet, there is still a dearth of digital choices to represent the richness of the language online. User experience designer Nour Chamoun aimed to bridge this gap when she launched Tarkeeb, an online database for Arabic typography, in 2015. “I felt there should be more representation for Arabic speakers and better options for designers.” Too many of the available Arabic fonts were poorly crafted or old fashioned, she said, limiting the scope for creativity when it came to developing websites, mobile apps and other interfaces for the modern user.
Now, the market has expanded as consumers demand new styles and expressions for their online voice. Monotype offers more than 50 font families that include Arabic. “It is becoming more important as a script for global brands, particularly as stakeholders realize the importance of maintaining a consistent visual identity,” said Tom Rickner, director of Monotype Studio Design.

But there’s still a way to go before the diversity of Arabic tongues is reflected in the digital landscape. “There’s a variety in the region that requires different tonalities,” Chahine said. “We need the right modes of visual communication to allow for the nuances of expression that give flavor to the written word.”
